Food delivery nearly back to pre-Covid level: Zomato – Times of India

BENGALURU: The food delivery industry is recovering at a fast pace with the sector recording gross merchandise levels that are 85% of pre-Covid, up from 75% in August, Zomato said in a blog post.
The recovery is being led by the metros, with Delhi and Mumbai at 95% of pre-Covid level, and Bengaluru and Chennai at 80%. Some cities, including Kolkata, Patna, Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Siliguri, have recovered completely and are even exceeding the pre-Covid level. It shows people are getting over their wariness of ordering food, even if they remain cautious about dining out.
In the metros, the affluent parts of a city are ordering more. “With more premium restaurants — that is, restaurants where a meal for two may cost Rs 1,500 and above — now opening up to online delivery, a larger number of affluent consumers are embracing online ordering. Overall spends on such premium restaurants have grown by over 25% over pre-Covid levels,” Zomato said.
The festive season is likely to see a spurt in such home deliveries as people are expected not to venture out much. Festivals and occasions such as Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Teacher’s Day, and Independence Day have seen a massive spike in orders.
Quick service restaurants such as McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and KFC have been able to recover better from the pandemic than dine-in restaurants because a sizeable part of their revenue is dependent on takeaways and online deliveries, which have surged during and after the lockdown. For dine-ins, the recovery is expected to take at least six months. It has got a little better with liquor now being allowed to be served.
